Art Jacoby's Monthly Newsletters

Newsletter Library - April 2008

Consistent, profitable growth is difficult even under the best of circumstances, as evidenced by the small percentage of companies able to accomplish it. In order to be on the winning end of the probability curve—and to stay there—keep three words in mind:

Don’t fight gravity.

When you embrace smart practices that help you move with the ebb and flow of the business world, you avoid many typical traps encountered by most companies.

Be smart about markets and employees:

  • Find the market niche to which you can present the most compelling value proposition. Other niches will not be as interested and will not reward you as well.
  • Hire and retain employees with whom you are compatible, and strive to maintain a harmonious team. You should expend your energy on serving customers and building relationships, not on mediating internal conflict.

Leverage outside resources:

  • Plan for infrastructure improvements as you grow. Waiting too long to add management, systems, and/or equipment slows you down just when you want to pick up speed.
  • Raise adequate capital to weather the inevitable peaks and valleys. Capital is the fuel that allows you to make decisive moves in a timely manner.

Grow the easy way…don’t fight gravity!
